Translated as the ‘map of the stars’, Nakshatra is one of the five elements of Panchang, representing constellations. Each Nakshatra is measured as 13 degrees and 20 mins in the 360 degrees of the zodiac chakra or roughly 15 to 27 hours. In Vedic Astrology, Nakshatras are believed to be 27 daughters of Prajapati Daksha, who are married to the moon and this is why the duration of the lunar month is said to be around 27 days. Including Abhijeet, the total number of Nakshatras is 28. The meaning of Nakshtra in Panchang is different from its meaning in a Janam Kundali.
Nakshatra is calculated by covering the bhogansha of the moon during an important activity in minutes and dividing it by 800. The Nakshatras that have passed is the number before the decimal in this calculation.
Here’s the order in which the Moon visits each Nakshatras. Note that the Nakshatra is understood in relation to the ruling planet, diety, as well as the dasha of the Nakshatra. This way, each Nakshatra is deemed auspicious or inauspicious.
