Mundan muhurats are calculated on the basis of several factors. As per the general tradition, first year is considered to be auspicious for mundan sanskars for both boys and girls. Furthermore, third, fifth, and seventh year and fourth, sixth, and eighth years are also appropriate for mundan sanskars for boys and girls respectively.

In terms of nakshatra, ashwani, mrigshira, pushya, hasta, punvarsu, chitra, swati, jeyta, shraavan, dhanishta, shatbhisha are considered favourable.
In terms of day: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (not for women) are desirable.
Usually, as per the Hindu panchang (calendar), before the ekadashi of asshan maah aur magh and falghun are considered auspicious.
