How Does Choghdiya Work?

Choghadiya, literally translated as ‘four hours’ or four ghadi, reveals the auspicious hours of the day to start a new task.  Also known as ‘ChaturdShtika’ as per the Hindu calendar, each choghadiya is equal to ninety six minutes with each ghadi equal to twenty four minutes. Every day is divided into 8 equal parts or choghadiya. There is daytime and nighttime choghadiya, each lasting for 12 hours beginning at sunrise. Choghadiya starts with udveg and ends with Amrit choghadiya. It starts with Udveg on a Sunday, because the ruling planet of the day is Sun, but choghadiya is different for every day but similar for the same day in different weeks. For instance, if we assume the sunrise at 6 am:

Aupicious and Inauspicious Choghadiya

Choghadiya is usually divided into seven categories and there are four auspicious choghadiya:

• Rog: Under the planet Mars, rog is associated with negative energy, however, it can be good when going to war or beating an enemy.

• Kaal: Under the influence of planet Saturn, it is an inauspicious time but can be good for accumulating wealth.

Each choghadiya is suitable for specific tasks for instance, labh is beneficial for excelling in tasks related to business or education, while chaar choghadiya is suitable for discovering the right time for cultural activities. But different choghadiya has specific implications. For instance, while udveg is generally inauspicious, it can be good for government-related work. Similarly, Kaal choghadiya, ruled by Saturn, is considered inauspicious but can be good for wealth accumulation.

It is advised not to begin any auspicious tasks during the Rahu Kaal, Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela or Kaal Ratri, even if an auspicious choghadiya.
