The Meaning and Calculation of Karana

Karana in astrology is based on the moon phase and when six phases or degrees of the moon complete, it gives us one karana. For one tithi, there are two karanas. There are a total of 11 karanas in astrology. They move in cyclical movement as per the movement of the moon in the thirty days of the month. There are movable and fixed karanas. It is said that depending on the ongoing karana in a tithi, it is auspicious to partake in some activities to extract its maximum benefits.

Karanas in a Tithi: What do they Signify?

There are seven movable karanas, also called char, or variables. These start in a particular sequence in the second half of Shukla paksha pratipada and end in the first half of Krisha paksha chaturdashi.

There are a total of four fixed karanas. These are also called sthir or constant. Sthir karana comes in the second half of Krishna paksha chaturdashi and ends in the first half of Shukla paksha in a specific sequence.
